How was the audio/visual quality? The video/audio quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? It was question and answer style.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  The sign for ASL poetry is different than spoken poetry so that was culturally bound.
Brief notes:  I felt like this went pretty well.  There was one part I struggled with, but I tried to Gish Up and try to get the gist of what he was saying instead of every detail.

Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8

How was the audio/visual quality? The video/audio quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He told a story about his experience.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  Topic specific jargon: reboot
Brief notes:  I think I did pretty good with that, but there was one point I didn't understand (I think toward the end.) I think I matched his emotions of being fed up and used a good tone to match his frustration at the tech support people/the situation.

4/20 For the Children 2

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He's telling stories that use lots of curse words.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…)In the beginning you see him laughing so he's obviously a little uncomfortable.  He tells funny stories though so he's having fun with it.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) His language is clear.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video/audio quality was good, but the actual video in GoReact was a little small/narrow so some of his signs were hard to see.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He set it up like a story. First he talked about his HS experience, then college, then fighting with his wife.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon? The swear words were topic-specific I guess.  The signs for offensive and defensive related to sports specifically.

Brief notes: I needed to have a little more lag time so I got his message before. I think I didn't do very well on my goal of speaking and then not missing the next thought.  I think I got most of what he said, but sometimes I felt like I missed something.

4/20 Lisa Lampinelli

Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: They're telling the audience to live life to the fullest and let all your experience add up to something you're proud of.  At the end of life you want to look back and feel like you really experienced life to the fullest.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…)  Music is very emotive.  It was definitely good to prepare for a few minutes because I got the meaning of the song more and could interpret the emotion behind his words.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) The song repeated itself so I tried to incorporate some of the same signs so that it was like a pattern.  His language was clear.  We definitely had to think about the meaning so I was thankful for the few minutes prior to actually interpreting so I could understand what the song was about.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video/audio quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? It was a song so it had a chorus which repeated.  He started at the beginning experiencing life and went to the end saying he hopes your happy when your final days come ("when the sun goes down") and feel like you truly experienced life.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  The whole song was topic-specific jargon because we really had to delve into what he meant versus what he actually said.
Brief notes:  I was kind of nervous to interpret a song, but that was actually awesome! I felt really connected to his words and was surprised that I loved this experience.

The Skill of Self Confidence 4/13

How was the audio/visual quality? The video/audio quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He set it up like a story.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  Some of soccer terminology or the cost of tuition for college was culturally bound.
Brief notes:  I feel like I tried to get his concepts more than just the words.  I also tried to incorporate more role shifting and taking on characters.  Sometimes it felt good, others, not so much.

What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) She spoke clear, but very quickly and she has a strong accent.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio/visual quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? She used personal experience to share her opinions and demonstrate solutions to the audience.  She used pictures to emphasize her points to show her designs that she discussed.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  Autism, Aspergers are both topic-specific jargon
Brief notes:  She went very fast and I feel like I left a lot of information out.  She had a lot of good examples that I tried to summarize.  I think I did well in most parts listening and getting the idea instead of just spitting out every word she said because then I never could have kept up with her!

How was the audio/visual quality? The audio quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? She told a story that led to her purpose.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was culturally bound information when she discussed Baptists, Wicca, fortune tellers, Hogwarts mug. There was topic-specific jargon Wicca, magic, curse.
Brief notes: I felt like I did a really good job taking on her character.  I tried to over exaggerate my emotions to match her over the top personality.  I also think I improved how I interpreter her side notes (her inner thoughts); towards the end I think it will look like I was talking to myself.  I fingerspelled curse throughout the video and I think I can come up with a better way to portray that concept in my take 2.

Self Help: How to be Happy 4/6

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 9
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 9
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He wants to share his philosophy for being happy despite having Progeria.

What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) He spoke clearly and had planned out his speech.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio and visual quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He planned his speech and used videos to enhance his speech.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was not a lot of culturally bound information-maybe the marching band.  There was topic-specific jargon related to the disease, Progeria and its effects on the body.
Brief notes: I felt pretty confident throughout this interpretation.  I tried to incorporate more expansion skills and use space more effectively.  I felt I had some really good use of ASL grammar by incorporating conditional phrases and rhetorical questions.

It Takes a Deaf World 3/30

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: To share knowledge about ASL and how learning this language impacts a Deaf child's development.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is very knowledgeable since he has experienced a life with sign language.  He described having 100% access and you can tell he is passionate since this topic affects all Deaf children and not knowing this information can really hurt the child.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) He was clear in his presentation, but signed a little fast for me.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was good and clear.
How did the presenter structure the presentation?  He started with a way to get hearing people to imagine living in a Deaf world.  Then he gave some background knowledge about the Deaf world, culture, and language. Then he told the audience how learning ASL impacts a Deaf child and not being exposed to a sign language can hinder their development.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of culturally bound information including Deaf history and Eyeth.  The idea of Deaf culture itself is culturally bound information.  The jargon related to the topic included the names of famous Deaf people or famous people involved in Deaf history (Gallaudet, Laurent Clerc), ASL, and Eyeth.
Brief notes: At the end I totally missed the last point!  I think I didn't give myself enough lag time.  I found myself speaking and missing what was being said as I voiced.

Black ASL 3/30

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He wanted to share his research about Black ASL and spread awareness that variations exist in ASL.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is very knowledgeable and well researched about the topic.  He obviously took a lot of time to research the topic and is connected to the subject.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…)  His language was clear and easy to follow.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He had different sections and had a plan that he shared with the audience through segments with title slides.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a ton of culturally bound information and topic specific jargon.  He mentioned the features of ASL, linguistic variations in ASL and sign languages around the world.  He also talked about black history in America when the school were segregated and how that impacted Black ASL.
Brief notes:  I definitely stumbled on some of his fingerspelled words like the names of his colleagues.  I missed some of the states he talked about too, but later filled some of that information in when he talked about variations throughout the states.

Polyamory 3/23/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He's sharing his ideas about a "new" kind of love/relationship.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is emotional and passionate about his topic.  He is excited to share his knowledge and really wants the audience to know their options because obviously, this choice and finding was important in his life.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) His language is clear.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio and visual quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He built on his concepts, but sometimes jumped around.  I got a little confused with his concept of 4 Cs. He went through them very fast and I missed the last two and then I never really caught on to them even later on in his presentation.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of culturally bound information regarding our ideas about love, relationships, partnerships, and life goals and what our lives should look like.  There was a lot of topic-specific jargon.  The entire presentation included jargon about polyamory and relationships.  Jargon: polyamory, monogamy, his organization's names.
Brief notes: I thought there were parts where I totally missed a concept and stopped halfway through a sentence.  There were other parts where I felt really confident that my message was equivalent to what he was trying to get across.  When I didn't understand something, I tried really hard to just get the gist of what he was saying because I felt like in this presentation each word wasn't necessarily important, but the message he was trying to convey was. Even if I missed one of his C terms, I still got his message across that people should know there are different options for relationships.

Stylit 3/23/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 9
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 9
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He's sharing a new technology and what it does, how it works.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is excited about the new technology. He wants to share its capabilities with the audience.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) His language is clear and he has a really good pace.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio and visual quality were good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He used his pictures to demonstrate the pen's abilities so it was mostly telling the audience what he was doing on the paper.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was some topic specific jargon when talking about the specific types of utensils used to create the art (oil painting, colored pencils, cross-hatching).
Brief notes: This was really fun to interpret.  It was a good pace for something I'm not familiar with so I think I did pretty well.  I think I did well adding in the audience's reactions and the hosts reactions off to the side too.  It was clear that other people were responding to his creations, not just him responding to himself.

Chess 3/23/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 5
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 4
What is the presenter’s purpose?: His purpose was to educate the audience about chess.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) The presenter is very matter of fact.  He gives the rules and doesn't have too much emotion behind his words.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) His language is clear, but he went through the game's rules pretty fast.  At times he repeated himself, but that helped me catch up to his concepts.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio and visual quality were fine.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He used the game to show examples.  He would set up a scenario and then explain the options or conclusions that could happen.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of topic-specific jargon including the pieces' names and the specific moves that could occur.
Brief notes:  That was really tough!  I didn't know how to use classifiers to show the pieces.  It wasn't until halfway through that I thought to adjust my palm orientation to show the difference between the white pieces and the black pieces.  I think I also changed my board orientation from like a billboard to in front of me on a table.  I don't think I effectively portrayed the message and the rules to the audience.

Trudy Suggs 3/9/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 6
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Educate interpreters about disempowerment.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) She seems emotive and excited to share her experiences.  She is enthusiastic and passionate because she wants her class to understand the importance of this topic.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) She was very clear, but also signed very fast so I missed most of the fingerspelling.
How was the audio/visual quality? The audio quality was okay.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? She had a powerpoint that she used to showcase the important points. She used personal experiences and other's stories to emphasize her points and show that this really does happen in the real world, everyday.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  I think the whole topic was culturally bound because it really spoke to interpreters about the Deaf community they are working with.  The interpreters should know the ways of the world and how to avoid disempowering their client.
Brief notes: I missed a lot of her fingerspelling, but I actually think I did okay on this assignment.  It wasn't a perfect match, but I caught a lot of her concepts and tried to share those rather than each word.  Since she signed fast it was much easier to grasp concepts rather than words anyway.  This topic was really complex, but I think I did a pretty good job.

Love Conquers All 3/9/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Share her experience after seeing a really touching show with which she really felt a connection.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) She is very emotive and passionate about the topic. Her facial expressions really show her passion and the style of her signing.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) She was clear for most of it,  but sometimes when she exaggerated the signs it was hard for me to understand.
How was the audio/visual quality? She was clear in the picture, but wow there was a lot of distracting background noise!
How did the presenter structure the presentation? She just told her story and personal experience and then went into her message and why she was sharing the story.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of culturally bound information and topic-specific jargon such as Deafhood and the oppression of the Deaf community.
Brief notes: I had a difficult time interpreting this.  She was very emotional so some of her signs seemed to be very exaggerated and I didn't understand some of what she said.  I know I took lots of long pauses trying to understand her message. I think I achieved her overall goal, but missed a lot of the details.

Whole House Remodel 3/2/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Advertise his abilities and skill as a home improvement business and.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is devoted to his project/topic because he is trying to sell himself and his skills.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) He speaks clearly.
How was the audio/visual quality? Audio and visuals were good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He is walking us through a home and showing us all the updates.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There wasn't culturally bound information presented, but there was some topic-specific jargon such as two-toned and grout.
Brief notes: Sometimes I get a little confused about where to set things up in my space.  Should I have cabinets be in front of my face because the kitchen is square or only show things on my right and left sides.  How do I show more than one thing at a time-ex: the granite countertop on the island?

Cell Structure 3/2/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 1
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 1
What is the presenter’s purpose?: The purpose is to teach an audience about cells and their structure.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) It sounded like a machine was speaking so it was very lethargic and monotone.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) The language was clear, but monotone. It sounded like a machine so it was hard to listen and take in the information.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was good.  The audio sounded fine, but it was tough to listen to the monotone voice.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He built on the information and used slides and pictures to help the audience visualize the cell.  He presented a single cell, then multi-cellular organisms, then plant and animal cells.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  The entire video was topic-specific jargon because it was an educational video about science.  There wasn't any culturally bound information.
Brief notes: WOW-that was bad.  I sat not moving for quite a bit of that video. I had no idea what to do or what he meant.  I am not really a science person so that video was out of my comfort zone and it was very difficult to portray the concepts in a way I thought the audience would understand.

For the Birds - 3/2/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 5
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence?5
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Entertain the audience
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) Even though there was no language, the storyline was very clear and I could follow it easily. Portraying it in ASL was difficult though.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was very good and clear.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? It was a cartoon. The characters were set up and a problem and the reaction to that problem were shown.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was no culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon.
Brief notes: This was actually really hard to interpret. I tried to think of what the Deaf Blind client would be getting from my production and I don't think I did very well. I think I should have acted out more instead of signing some of the signs/words.  Even though I knew the signs, I should've taken on the birds characters more in order to make the story more dynamic.

2/23/17 Morning News

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Share the news, tell a first hand experience, share a funny skit
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) The newscaster seemed neutral, but the cancer surviver was obviously emotionally invested in her topic.  She wanted the audience to learn more about how to support breast cancer and the survivors. The third story-the women were very emotive.  I did not understand their joke/story at all though.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) The news man and Mary were both clear and I understood them, but the final two women were very difficult to understand.  I think they were over exaggerating their signs and I kind of missed the gist of their story.  I tried to "Gish Up" and just say what the joke was about, but I think I failed because they were trying to say why the sign was funny related to the actual act and I missed the connection.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was fine until the end when it went back and forth for the two women-then it was a little difficult to follow.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? The first story was just informative, the second told a personal experience and related it to how one can seek information and learn how to support people affected by breast cancer, the third was a skit.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  The third story (the two woman) had a lot of culturally bound information and specific jargon because it was all related to the ASL sign.
Brief notes: I felt really confident until the last story.  Mary's story was definitely the easiest for me to follow and I think I got all the information.  I think I missed something in the beginning about the plane and the third story I just totally fluffed my interpretation because I didn't understand :(

2/23/17 Interview about

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8.5
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 9
What is the presenter’s purpose?: She's giving an overview of her presentation and answering the interviewer's questions.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) She is emotive and passionate about her topic.  She has a real interest that one can see coming through in her language and body language.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) She was clear.
How was the audio/visual quality? The video quality was good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? It was a Q&A so the interviewer asked questions and she responded.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was culturally bound information when she discussed the Deaf community being oppressed and the need for partnership between the communities because they are related.  There was topic-specific jargon when she discussed CDIs, interpreters, the Deaf community.
Brief notes: I actually feel really good about this interpretation.  Watching her previous video did help because I knew a little bit about Deaf Cultural Wealth.  There were a few times when I didn't know what she was talking about, but I tried really hard to keep my lag time shorter.  My mentors have been telling me my lag time is too long so in this video I tried to keep up with her and I think I included a lot of the information and really understood her concepts.  I think this is the first time that I really feel confident about my interpretation.  The one thing I did struggle with was how to differentiate when she was answering a question and the interviewer was asking a question.  I think it sounded like one continuous monologue where she was questioning herself.

Make Sex Normal 2/16/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 7
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 7
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Educate people
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) She is emotional and passionate. She wants to share the importance of her topic and share the fact that we have to start a discussion.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) She spoke clearly and understandably.
How was the audio/visual quality? Good
How did the presenter structure the presentation? Lecture style, but she kept the audience engaged by sharing personal experiences form her own life and stories she heard while researching the topic.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of topic specific jargon related to sex. There was also culturally bound information because Americans are not comfortable speaking about sex and our bodies.  I think this information is important because it is why we don't talk about sex or share with our children.
Brief notes:  I think I started out strong and then at the end it got a little harder to process. I felt myself using the sign DISCUSSION a lot so I want to change that when I interpret next time.  At the end when she shared the quotes from her research I applied "Gish Up" because I didn't catch the full quote, but got the idea.  I think my use of space was a little unclear when she told the story about her mom and grandmother too so I'll be interested to watch that when I analyze my video and see what I actually did.

Racism 2/16/17

What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) The language quality was clear, but sometimes when they switched speakers or introduced someone new it was a little difficult to tell.
How was the audio/visual quality? It was okay quality. Sometimes I didn't understand everything they said because there were some asides, but overall, good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? It was a discussion.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of topic-specific jargon including red lining, food stamps, share cropping, white privilege, white supremacy, color blind.  Almost everything related to the topic is topic-specific jargon because the words were created to explain or describe these ideas/events.
Brief notes: It really helped to have learned the vocab words prior to interpreting this!  I think I did okay in the beginning, but it got harder as the video went on.  Sometimes I didn't know how to explain in ASL what he was describing in English.  I felt good about my facial expressions which sometimes I know I ignore.  I felt myself looking away a lot so I need to improve my eye gaze.  I think I was trying to understand the content and I tend to look away when I'm trying to figure out what's going on.  There were a few times when I couldn't figure out how to sign something and I think I really need to work on expansion skills and need to teach myself to show the concept as best I can when I can't think of a sign or single word.

Academic ASL 2/9/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 6
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 5
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He's educating his audience on the importance of Academic ASL.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He's passionate about the topic.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) He was clear, but fingerspelled a bit too fast for me to understand a lot of the words.
How was the audio/visual quality? Good.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He used powerpoint slides to support his presentation.  He listed journals and organizations.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There were organizational references using acronyms in relation to interpreting.
Brief notes: That was rough. I think I left out a ton of information because I was trying to figure out the best way to say what I thought he meant.  I struggled to understand one part at the end because I couldn't figure out what he was trying to say-I tried using the context around it, but I'll definitely watch that part again. I don't think I had a lot of emotion in my voice, but he seemed very passionate about the topic so I think I should've shown that more through my voice inflection. I think this will be a video that I watch without interpreting and understand a lot more because I think he signed very clear, but I just missed a lot of it.  I also think I spit out a lot of random words that I recognized, but didn't connect them to a sentence.  When he listed something or I didn't understand a lot, I tried to just say what I did understand. I need to put out complete thoughts though!

I think doing the padlet and mind maps may help more when we voice because then we look up words related to the topic and then can use those during the interpretation.

Ethics 2/9/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: He wants to educate people about the need for CDIs.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) He is passionate about the topic and very clear in his views on the issue.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) He was clear and to the point. He gave good examples that supported his ideas.
How was the audio/visual quality? He was a little unclear, but I could understand what he said.
How did the presenter structure the presentation? He had clear questions that he presented and then offered his opinions or solutions to the prompts.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon? The whole topic was culturally bound and used topic-specific jargon. CDI is something that most hearing people (outside of the interpreting community) would not know.  I think he was talking to interpreters, but after typing this, I feel I should have said in the beginning Certified Deaf Interpreter to clarify the meaning.
Brief notes: At the end, I missed some of what he said so I need to go back and try to figure that part out. I think I did pretty well on this though. I think I understood a lot of his information, but I need to work on my presentation. I am focusing so much on getting the words out that I forget to put forth the emotion that the signer is showing. I'm proud of this interpretation. It wasn't perfect, but I think I understood most of what he said and didn't miss too much information until the end when I struggled a bit more.

Copy Signing Experience

Deaf Awareness Month with Ben Bahan & The Significance of Deaf Interpreters Conference

Why is this helpful? It is a good transition from understanding language while reproducing it in the same language to understanding language and interpreting it into a different language. This is a great exercise if you feel you understand signers when you are not interpreting for them, but then lose the message when your voice turns on.

Copy signing is helpful because I don't have to think about the correct way to sign something. I was proud that I still understood a lot of the presentation even though I struggled to keep up with their signing. I skipped many fingerspelled words, but overall I think I did pretty well.  Not understanding all those fingerspelled words shows me the importance of practicing my receptive skills! I enjoyed copy signing the second video because I feel as though I incorporated/copied the signer's facial expressions well.  I struggled a little at first to simultaneously copy them and understand what the conversation was about, but as I kept going I understood more and more.  After a while I was simply understanding what they were discussing and could focus more on copying the correct body language facial expressions, non manual markers, and use of space.  Overall, I missed some words and concepts, but feel this exercise helped me produce more natural, fluid ASL because I wasn't so focused on interpreting.

Comptroller 2/2/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 4
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 4
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Educate the audience about their budget plan and current financial standings.
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) The presenter spoke formally, was very clear and to the point.
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) The presenter spoke clearly and got to the point quickly with each topic.
How was the audio/visual quality? good
How did the presenter structure the presentation? His was a prepared speech.  He used powerpoint slides to show/support his information through graphs and charts.
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There was a lot of topic specific jargon related to the government and the finances related to the state's employment rates and wages, etc.
Brief notes: I kept messing up the number millions and billions. I should spell them out so that I don't confuse my clients.  I had trouble explaining a lot of what he was talking about.  His speech was slower so it was easier to follow than the LDS report, but I still struggled to form the information into ASL. I did prepare to know what FY was (fiscal year) but I should've included the short handed FY into my interpretation.  I think I missed some information and then threw a number up with no association to anything I signed prior to or after. I definitely need to practice signing bigger numbers because I take too much time thinking about what I'm doing with the numbers and miss a whole bunch of information.

Time Management 2/2/17

Initial gut reaction 1-Not at all   10-Yes, definitely
Did I convey presenter’s overall message? 8
Did I deliver the interpretation with confidence? 8
What is the presenter’s purpose?: Educate the audience on time management in college
What is the presenter’s attitude toward the topic?: (emotive, excited, lethargic…) Desire to share his knowledge/help students succeed
What was the presenter’s language quality? (clear, redundant, evasive, tangents…) clear, emphasized important parts
How was the audio/visual quality? good
How did the presenter structure the presentation?
Did the source text use any culturally bound information or topic-specific jargon?  There wasn't a lot of topic specific jargon or cultural information.  The speaker was generally speaking about how time management would help students do better in school and in life.
Brief notes: I think I did okay on this. I tried not to have too much lag time because sometimes I overdo that and get confused on signing and listening at the same time.  I felt good about using lists and keeping up with the speaker.  I used the tools available (the slides) to help me when I wanted to understand a concept or if I missed the speaker's sentence.  My mentor and I are working on my confidence so before this video I told myself I could do it and to think like my  mentor and I think it helped me. I felt a little bit more relaxed and think I produced a more complete message than I sometimes do.
